Creative Mentoring

         Student Mentor Initiative

The Creative Mentoring Student Mentor Initiative is a program of Connecting Generations, which supports on-site mentoring programs in New Castle, Kent and Sussex Counties of Delaware.  Traditionally Creative Mentoring has exclusively trained adults interested becoming mentors.  However, many of our partner schools have found that given the opportunity, students can be effective mentors also. To better support our partners and these new mentoring relationships, the Creative Mentoring Program launched a pilot student mentor program in the fall of 2009.

Through funding received through Delaware Community Foundations’ New Castle County Youth Philanthropy Board, and the Christ Church Outreach Committee, the staff of the Creative Mentoring Program developed a training model and training manual exclusively designed for students who are interested in becoming mentors.  Since its launch, we have trained over 280 student mentors from over 16 sites throughout the state.  Because of the dire need for more mentors and high school students’ enthusiasm about volunteering and making a difference, as well as teenagers’ unique ability to connect with younger students, especially when properly trained, this new initiative is a win-win for everyone involved.
